Plan Your Trip to Wadi Rum

Weather & Best Time to Visit

Wadi Rum is a desert; the temperatures and conditions vary a lot depending on the season, so it’s worth planning ahead.

Spring (March–May) is the best time to ride. Temperatures are pleasant during the day (18–25°C). Nights can be cool especially in March, and the desert light is beautiful. Our busiest and most popular season is April. If the winter brought a lot of rain, you might see a desert that’s very green and with plenty of flowers.

Autumn (September–November) is equally good. Similar temperatures to spring, and the September heat has dropped enough to make long days in the saddle comfortable.

Summer (June–August) is hot, very hot. Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 35–40°C. Rides are only organised on demand, with a long lunch break and adapted riding pace to the heat.

Winter (December–February) can be surprisingly cold, especially at night. Days are often sunny and clear but night temperatures can drop close to freezing. Warm layers are essential.

Weather & What to Bring

Riding gear and personal items:
  • Riding helmet (mandatory) and riding trousers — bring a spare pair
  • Sun cream, UV-protective lip balm, and sunglasses
  • Buff or neck gaiter — essential protection from sun and wind on horseback
  • Headlamp
  • External battery pack for your phone

Camp essentials:

  • Sleeping bag and pillow
  • Towel
  • Reusable water bottle — we buy large water containers to refill, to reduce plastic waste
  • Lighter — to burn toilet paper in the desert (please be responsible with fire)
  • Wet wipes, preferably reusable ones. Waste management in Jordan is poor — everything you bring in, you take out.
Health and medicine:
  • Basic kit: paracetamol, ibuprofen, Imodium, Motilium, Buscopan, antibiotics if your doctor will prescribe them
  • Any personal medication you need
For cold months (November, December, January, February, March especially):

  • Warm layers for the evenings. It can get cold and very windy at night in the desert

We provide mattresses, blankets, tents, and farwas (traditional Bedouin cloaks) for the evenings.
